Sen. Edward Kennedy backed Sen. Barack Obama for president Monday, saying, "It is time again for a new generation of leadership."
"It is time now for Barack Obama," the Massachusetts senator and brother of the late President Kennedy added.
He stood with Obama, his son, Rep. Patrick Kennedy, and his niece, Caroline Kennedy, before a screaming capacity crowd of students at American University in Washington.
"Like you, we want a president who appeals to the hopes of those who still believe in the American dream," he said.
"I've found that candidate. And it looks to me like you have too," he said.
After Kennedy spoke, Obamatold the boisterous crowed: "I know what your support means. I know the cherished place the Kennedy family holds in the hearts of the American people."
And the Illinois Democrats said he would work to carry on the vision the senator's brother laid out when he was president nearly five decades ago.
"The dream has never died ... it lives on in those Americans, young and old, rich and poor, black and white, Latino and Asian and Native American, gay and straight, who are tired of a politics that divides us and want to recapture the sense of common purpose that we had when John Kennedy was president of the United States of America," Obama said.

Sen. Barack Obama claimed a significant victory in the South Carolina Democratic primary on Saturday, telling supporters "we are hungry for change."The Illinois senator earned more than twice the vote that rival Sen. Hillary Clinton did, 55 percent to 27 percent, unofficial returns showed. Former Sen. John Edwards was third with 18 percent.
"Tonight, the cynics who believed that what began in the snows of Iowa was just an illusion were told a different story by the good people of South Carolina," Obama said to supporters Saturday.
A win in South Carolina was considered crucial for Obama, who won Iowa but finished second to Clinton in New Hampshire and Nevada.
"I did not travel around this state over the last year and see a white South Carolina or a black South Carolina. I saw South Carolina," he said.
"The choice in this election is not between regions or religions or genders," Obama said. "It's not about rich versus poor; young versus old; and it is not about black versus white.

A decade ago, she called Bill Clinton the nation's "first black president." Now, acclaimed black writer Toni Morrison’s first presidential endorsement is going to the potential second, Barack Obama. In a letter to Obama released Monday morning, the “Beloved” author told him she was backing him because “this is one of those singular moments that nations ignore at their peril.”
“There have been a few prescient leaders in our past, but you are the man for this time,” she wrote
Morrison, who said she had long admired Hillary Clinton, added that her decision to back Obama instead was not based on the Illinois senator’s race.
“In addition to keen intelligence, integrity and a rare authenticity, you exhibit something that has nothing to do with age, experience, race or gender and something I don't see in other candidates,” Morrison wrote. “That something is a creative imagination which coupled with brilliance equals wisdom. It is too bad if we associate it only with gray hair and old age.”

More gossip plumes are poofing up from the sudden crash of Eddie Murphy and Tracey Edmonds' marriage – which was done "spiritually" in Bora Bora during New Year's weekend but never made legal in the United States as planned.
The National Enquirer claims their respective families were at odds, particularly the mothers of the bride and groom. According to the tabloid, Murphy's mom felt Edmonds was a gold digger, while Tracey's mom felt Eddie wasn't good enough for her daughter.
As previously reported, there are also rumors that plans for the legal wedding hit a brick wall because Edmonds refused to sign a prenup.
A source told the New York Post: "There was no way Eddie would go through with it without knowing that his fortune would be protected if they split up."
Various reports also had the families bickering with each other during the wedding weekend on the island.

Turner, who died Dec. 12 at age 76, had a history of drug problems. Hypertension and emphysema also contributed to his death, the medical examiner reportedly concluded.
Though recognized as a rock-music pioneer, Turner is best known for his tumultuous and abusive relationship with former wife and singing partner Tina Turner.

The wedding ceremony between Eddie Murphy and film producer Tracey Edmonds two weeks ago was only symbolic -- and that's as far as they plan to go, they announced Wednesday. Murphy, 46, and Edmonds, 40, traded vows on New Year's Day on a private island off Bora Bora in French Polynesia in a ceremony that was not legally binding.
"After much consideration and discussion, we have jointly decided that we will forgo having a legal ceremony as it is not necessary to define our relationship further," said a statement on behalf of Murphy and Edmonds issued by publicist Arnold Robinson.
"While the recent symbolic union in Bora Bora was representative of our deep love, friendship and respect that we have for one another on a spiritual level, we have decided to remain friends," the statement said.
The statement did not clarify whether the two remained a couple. In an e-mail exchange, Robinson said he could not comment beyond the statement.
Murphy has six children from previous relationships. He and Edmonds, whose credits include "Dreamgirls" and "Beverly Hills Cop," began dating last year. They became engaged in July.

Actor-comedian David Alan Grier and wife Christine Y. Kim had a baby girl, the couple tell PEOPLE.

A two-day search for a popular South Carolina high school student ended Saturday with the discovery of the teenager's body in a local river and the arrest of a married couple who police say killed the teen and set her car on fire.
A student spotted the body of Marisha Jeter, 16, as she took photographs near the Broad River. Jeter had been stabbed in the neck, Union County Public Safety Chief Sam White told ABC News.
Jeter, who was president of the junior class at Union County High School and was also a cheerleader, had been last seen Thursday night on her way to McDonald's. She was reported missing early Friday morning by her father, a member of the Union County School Board, after he spent the night driving around looking for her.
Jeter's family told police that Marisha had recently been in touch with Pernell Clayton Thompson, a 20-year-old from neighboring Jonesville, whom she'd been in a relationship with. Thompson had recently married and had a child with another women, Yolanda Lee Thompson, 19.
White said Public Safety officials interviewed the Thompsons individually, both of whom said that they knew nothing about her disappearance.
"He more or less said he didn't know where she was and he would help us find her," White said. "He said that they had a relationship and it went sour, but he didn't give us too much detail."
By Saturday morning, the state police had joined the investigation, and that afternoon, Jeter's body was found about 15 miles from Union at the bottom of a steep river embankment. The photographer used her camera to zoom in and then realized she was looking at a body.
Immediately, police contacted the Thompsons a second time. "We told them during questioning what we found and presented them with information," White said. "They both confessed."
Both were charged in the murder of Jeter and are being held at the Union County Detention Center. They will make their court appearances next week, White said. The pair has apparently never been in trouble with the law before.
Investigators said the fatal confrontation began when Jeter received a text message Thursday evening from Thompson to meet her at the Union YMCA to return a coat. When Jeter arrived, however, she was met by Thompson and his wife, Yolanda, who had discovered that her husband was still communicating with Jeter.
There was a struggle, White said, and Jeter was stabbed in the neck. "They put her in the trunk of her car and drove her car down to Lockhart," he continued, where the body was dumped into the river. The car was driven a few miles down the main road, doused with gasoline and set on fire.

The headlines last summer mentioned dehydration as a reason for Kelly Rowland's collapse on stage during a concert in Lagos, Nigeria, but the singer now says that the six-hour time difference may have also been a factor.
"I was exhausted. Not only that but the time difference threw me off and I was jet-lagged," said the former Destiny's Child singer. "And I stayed up all night on the phone."
Ne-Yo is suing the Georgia-based promoters of R. Kelly's Double Up tour claiming he was kicked off the bill in November because music critics and the audience liked him better than the headliner.
The complaint filed in Los Angeles Superior Court accuses Rowe Entertainment of breaching Ne-Yo's touring contract and violating his right of publicity by removing him from the 25-city tour after only two dates.
"Plaintiffs...allege...that an unknown representative of R. Kelly urged Rowe to terminate Smith from the tour given the audience and critics' more favorable reaction to Smith than the reaction to R. Kelly," the suit says, according to E! Online.
As previously reported, Ne-Yo underscored the sentiment following his dismissal just before Thanksgiving, telling BET: "People were talking more about my set than [Kelly's], and I don't think he liked that too much."
Following the abrupt firing, Kelly's camp explained away Ne-Yo's dismissal as a "contractual issue" between him and the promoter, saying Kelly played no part in the decision.
Compound Touring, which was responsible for arranging Ne-Yo's participation, joins Ne-Yo in suing Rowe Entertainment, claiming it lost a substantial amount of money when the singer was kicked off the tour.
RESPONSE FROM R. KELLY'S CAMP
"The idea that R. Kelly had anything to do with Ne-Yo being dropped from the Double Up tour is just plain silly. As we said at the time, Ne-Yo was dropped because of a contractual dispute with the tour promoter, and in fact Ne-Yo is not suing Kelly but only the promoter. Ne-Yo may think blaming the situation on R. Kelly will improve his chances of collecting from the promoter, but if he does, he is sadly mistaken. Anyone remotely familiar with R. Kelly knows he is confident enough in his own abilities to be happy to share the stage with enormously talented people -- the more talented, the better."
